A Sweet Star is Born

At @ i37 today a FIFA star was born as Team Sweetpatch TV, our Pro FIFA squad, was launched. Check out how Alex Smyth (aka Beanz007) shone in the tournament...

Alex Smyth (aka Beanz007) turned up today @ i37 to both take part in the WCG FIFA 09 Tournament and to celebrate the realisation of a long term dream to launch our Pro FIFA squad, Team Sweetpatch TV.  He arrived a bit of an unknown and went home a hero!

Group Stages

Alex was drawn in a group of 4 with Pimpz and Hughjarse from YoyoTech and the highly revered Classic from Dignitas.

In his first match he took on i36 Champion Hughjarse and conquered him 6v0.  To be fair to some of the console players, the PC version of FIFA 09 is a very different game and Hugh not having played much was not in his comfort zone.

In Alex's 2nd match he played Dignitas' Xbox star Classic (Luke Stovell).  In a tight match the honours were shared 1v1.

In to the final match where he needed a win or a draw to qualify, he took on our Irish friend Pimpz from YoyoTech.  In a match where Alex had plenty of possession in Pimpz half but Pimpz managed to contain and they shared the spoils in a 2v2 draw.

That gave Alex 5 points and enabled him to secure 2nd place in Group A behind Classic.

In Group B Michael Barrett (Bazza) and Ben Andrews (infused Ben) conquered Nibbler and Graham Ellix (SKaMzZ) to also join James Barrett (Mini Bazza), Dan Bushell (Chubbsta), Chris Bullard (ChriSSyB) and Ashley Evans (immense_P), who all qualified for the elimination stages following their success at yesterday's Meet Your Match tournament, in the knockout stages.

Knockout Stages

Alex was drawn against new MYM champion (13 year old) Mini Bazza in the Quarter Finals and won out 2 games v 0 in a best of 3 matchup.  James pushed Alex but James' lack of experience on the PC meant he could not emulate his amazing success in MYM.

Following infused Ben's walkover victory against Chubbsta a wonder semi final was viewed by the crowd at i37 with a deciding game to remember in the history of UK FIFA tournaments.

In the first match Alex dominated and took the victory.  In the 2nd game Ben raised his game and took the match and the fixture in to the deciding game (and what a game it was!)

Ben took a commanding 2v0 lead and we all thought it was curtain for Alex.  Then in the last few minutes of the match the unthinkable happened as Alex scored 2 late goals to take the deciding game in to extra time.  It was an amazing turnaround as Alex found the spirit from somewhere to grab a draw from what seemed a certain defeat.

Alex was able to take his momentum in to extra time and ran out 4v2 victor.  What a turnaround as we a matter of minutes to go h went from 2v0 down to winning by 4 goals to 2.

Alex was to meet 3 times WCG UK champion ChriSSyB in the final after he swept aside Classic in his quarter final and Bazza in the semi.

Final

The final was a completely new experience for Alex as he took on ChriSSyB on the main stage at i37 with the added pressure of the TV coverage and a rowdy crowd.  he did really well and went down only 2v1 in the first match and therefore needed to win the next 2 to take the title.  Unfortunately ChriSSyB's experience came to the fore in the 2nd match and he won comfortably 4v0 and therefore bagged his 4th WCG UK title.

We were all very proud of Alex as he had only played FIFA on the PC for the last week and had really developed his game well to a point where he nearly won himself a trip to China to represent the UK (and Team Sweetpatch TV) in the Grand Finals of the WCG.

Well done to Alex and what a great start for our Team Sweetpatch TV, taking a highly coveted 2nd place in our very first day of existence.  Bring on the rest of the squad and bring on more FIFA tournaments as we look to make a major impression in the FIFA Pro gaming scene (and have plenty of fun at the same time).

As the team progresses they will represent us at both LAN's and online tournaments and we wish them all the luck as they represent Sweetpatch TV in the world FIFA gaming scene. A small step for Team Sweetpatch TV, a large step forwards for FIFA Pro Gaming!
