Listen to FSB’s Aaron McHardy “Momentum” Interview

Our partners at FIFA Soccer Blog have bagged a unique interview with FIFA Producer Aaron McHardy about the emotive subject of Momentum, Scripting, Simply having a bad game. Call it whatever you like.

It’s probably the most discussed topic on the FIFA boards ever and one that’s divided the community in a bigger way than the manual vs assisted debate could ever hope to.

EA are steadfast in their denial but there are groups that are having none of it and firmly believe that some form of scripting exists to weigh in on the outcome of matches. Given that it’s such a massive issue for some people FSB put together a list of questions related to the topic and sent them over to EA.

Romily Broad then sat game play producer Aaron Mchardy down and got him to work through them, reading each question out before answering, giving us the Dev teams perspective on things.

Check out Aaron’s 20 minutes of explanation, straight from the horses mouth so to speak, over at FSB’s Momentum: Aaron McHardy Interview.

Goal-line Technology Get’s the Green Light

Goal or no goal? Referees will soon no longer have to decide themselves whether the ball has crossed the line or not without technical assistance. Following nine months of testing in England, Germany, Hungary and Italy, at a special meeting in Zurich on 5 July, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) decided to introduce goal-line technology into football. What a massive step forwards for football all around the world.

Following nine months of testing the International Football Association Board (IFAB) decided to introduce goal-line technology into football on 5 July in Zurich.

Here is a fun look into the thinking behind the need for Goal-line technology, which was approved for use in football by the IFAB.

Of the eight companies that took part in the first round of tests, only two systems – Hawk-Eye and GoalRef – successfully completed the process and can now apply to become FIFA goal-line technology licensees.

GoalRef system – magnetic field technology

The GoalRef system creates the radio equivalent of a light curtain. Low magnetic fields are produced around the goal, and as soon as the ball, which is fitted with a compact electronic device, fully crosses the line, a minor change in the magnetic field is detected, thus allowing the exact position of the ball to be established. If a goal has been scored, an alert is transmitted to the match officials via a radio signal within one second, with a message displayed on their watches and via vibration.

Hawk-Eye system – goal-line camera technology

The Hawk-Eye system uses six to eight high-speed cameras set up at different angles at each end to calculate the exact position of the ball. The data from the cameras is then transferred to video software. From this data, the system generates a graphic image (3D) of the ball’s trajectory. The match officials are informed of whether or not it was a goal within one second.

The FIFA licensing process

With immediate effect, the manufacturers of goal-line technology can apply to FIFA for a licence to install their system. Before obtaining a licence, the technology must undergo a series of extensive laboratory and field tests as well as testing in simulated match situations.

Once the tests have been passed and the application requirements have been met, the system is accepted into the licensing programme. After signing the contracts with FIFA, the manufacturer receives official authorisation to install the goal-line technology worldwide.

Once the system has been installed in a stadium, it undergoes a final inspection to check its functionality. The results of the final installation test must be accepted by the licensee’s customer, i.e. the competition organiser, club or stadium operator, before the system can be put into operation.

As soon as FIFA has received and checked all of the signed documents, the installation is awarded the FIFA QUALITY PRO mark. The goal-line technology can then be used in official matches.

The Machine - A Documentary Film About Bruce Grannec

As we recently featured, Bruce Grannec, also known as The Machine, is the best player in the world of football video games. An exclusive documentary film recounts his story in the recent world cup organized jointly by the FIFA and EA SPORTS in Dubai in May and as promised we have the Teaser video plus our exclusive interview with the Machine.

Bruce Grannec, 25 years old, is a professional virtual player. He is today the only one who has been crowned world champion both on FIFA and PES.

He has participated in three FIFA Interactive World Cup finals and hit the podium each time. He was world champion in 2009, finished third in 2010 and second this year in Dubai. A regularity never seen before.

A team of reporters had the opportunity to follow Bruce Grannec in Dubai to get an insight into his personality and observe the preparation of the man who is regarded as the best player of the world.

This resulted in a documentary film compiling interviews of Bruce, his relatives as well as his opponents. The title of the documentary, « The Machine », refers to Bruce’s nickname that comes from his ability to never show any emotion to his opponents.

The documentary film will be released in the first two weeks of September and it will last 52 minutes.

To coincide with the launch of the Teaser video, we also have our unique interview with the man himself, Bruce « The Machine » Grannec.

« The Machine » | Sweetpatch TV Interview

Sweetpatch TV: As a previous World Champion at both PES and FIFA, how do you see the future for both games?

Bruce:

7 to 8 years ago, I couldn’t imagine that I would only be playing FIFA in the future. I think that Konami totally failed the transition to new generation consoles contrary to EA Sport for whom it was a success. I see therefore a good future for FIFA since the game keep on evolving in the right way. However, I’m more worried about PES which does not manage to catch up.

Sweetpatch TV: What do you feel is the number 1 reason you have managed to stay at the very top of competitive eSports so consistently?

Bruce:

I guess it’s the will. You must have the motivation and the will to participate in competitions after so many years. I think that one of my strengths is that I never rest on my laurels, and I always try to get better.

Sweetpatch TV: If you could pass on one piece of advice to budding FIFA champions, what would it be?

Bruce:

I would advise players to try their luck in offline tournaments because that’s the best way to improve and to gain experience. Also, it’s important not to get discouraged if you’re not performing well at the beginning, perfomance comes with the time.

Sweetpatch TV: As FIFA develops, what would you most like to see introduced in to the game?

Bruce:

It’s quite hard to say because the game is close to perfection. However, if I could make some modifications, I would like that building actions become more complicated, that there are more failures in passes and that defence is favoured over the attack.

Sweetpatch TV: As FIWC develops, what would you like to see it develop in to?

Bruce:

I would like the online qualification system to be modified a bit because it requires to play a lot to have a chance to qualify and not everyone can spend hours on FIFA. I would also like more live qualification events.

Sweetpatch TV: What is your favourite feature within FIFA?

Bruce:

Simply the realism of the game, the fact that it is close to an actual football game.

Sweetpatch TV: If you could change one thing in the competitive FIFA scene, what would it be?

Bruce:

Obviously, I would like that more competitions take place but also that the competitive FIFA scene professionalize more as it’s one of the best-selling video games in the world. Finally, I would like consistent rules and regulations for all the competitions so that there is no bad surprises (eg: camera view, custom formations, pass assistance, etc…)

Sweetpatch TV: And finally, what are your goals for FIFA 13?

Bruce:

Continue to have fun and then try to qualify for another FIWC finals, even though it will probably not be simple because the level is high at the French final.

Thank you so much to Bruce for this unique insight in to his world of FIFA and we all now look forward to the release of his full documentary in early September, « The Machine » | A Documentary Film About Bruce Grannec.
